Ethiopian Crosses - a brief background
It is believe that the Christian faith has thrived in Ethiopia since the first century. As a result Ethiopian crosses bear very little similarity to crosses found in Europe. They have a salient style and look to them that are native to their land of origin. These crosses are generally named after the regions they hail from such as Lalibela, Gondar and Axum.
Almost exclusively, the crosses are made of fine lattice work. A square at the base of the crosses represents the ark of the covenant. Meaning can be attributed to the complex intertwined lattice forms, it represent everlasting life. The predominant church is the Orthodox Tewahedo Church, Tewahedo means union, they believe Christ’s full humanity and divinity became one, as in one united nature.
